We are dedicated to implementing the best possible systems and practices that are truly sustainable. These include guidelines from LEED-ND (Lead in Energy and Environmental Design for Neighborhood Development) by the USGBC and BERDE (Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence) by the PHILGBC.
We looked at multiple areas including development of environmental sustainability, critical infrastructure, human capital and community involvement. We evaluated what other resorts around the world were doing and incorporated ideas from consultants on important areas. Through these efforts we were able to create a sustainability plan and environmental protection plan that sets a standard for others to follow which includes the use of a waste water treatment facility, the first on the island.
A true sustainable plan takes into account all living things. We did an environmental impact review to take all of these things into consideration. This review guided our landscape design ensuring the proper amount of green spaces and creating a holistic environment. Along with meeting the DENR (Department of Natural Resources) requirements our planning exceeded them in every category. We created a barrier between the building and the beach as a natural protection for the ocean. We created an Environment Department and hired an Environment Manager to oversea all of these operations from pre-construction through the daily operations. This manager will also play an active role in training staff and others in environmental protection.
We designed and constructed energy-efficient buildings that reduce air, water, and land pollution and adverse environmental effects from energy production and consumption.
Our public spaces were designed to improve physical and mental health and social capital by providing a variety of open spaces close to work and home to facilitate social networking, civic engagement, physical activity, and time spent outdoors.
Community Involvement
No man is an island even if you live on one. The positive involvement of the community is important to the overall success of any project. Our approach from the beginning is to partner with and get impute from the local community. Through this we have created several key areas for participation.
a) A training program for local vendors. This is how farmers, fishermen, contractors and others can provide services, bid on work and interact with the project community. This includes local made items sold at the resort shops.
b) We will work with the high school to set up an internship program for 4th year students that can transform into employment upon graduation.
c) We will build and manage an island museum/art gallery that will feature exhibits about the history of the island and promote local artists.
d) As part of the local promotion of the resort we will offer a free one-night honeymoon package for anyone who gets married on the island.
e) We will provide classes to local schools on environmental protection.
f) We will also be involved in a variety of other outreach and support events that strengthens ties to the community.
In the end sustainability and “going green” is not a buzzword. It must have practical applications that make sense, protect the environment and lay the foundation for future growth that is truly sustainable. We believe we have achieved that.
